Slowing Ships for Cleaner Air, Safer Whales

Can reducing ship speeds in the Santa Barbara Channel reduce ship/whale collisions while improving air quality? A new trial program in the Santa Barbara Channel gives cargo ships incentives to slow down to reduce air pollution and increase protection of endangered whales. We talk with Sean Herron, California Sea Grant Fellow with Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, who tells us about the Vessel Speed Reduction program coordinated by a coalition of government and non-profit groups.
